EWA STRYJNIK

Ewa Stryjnik was born in Sanok, Poland in 1974 and became a Canadian citizen in 1994. She graduated with a Masters in Fine Art from York University in 1999. She defines the paintings as abstract landscape. However the landscapes are not physical territories but human placement. They are compositions of landscapes transformed into stories in order to stimulate the memory of a particular place, person or experience. The stories dictate the emotional atmosphere of the paintings. The process of painting mimics the process of memory. The action of multiple layering, scratching and scraping-off maps the fragments of remembered story. The physical marks not only trace the story, they excavate the experience.
