Gisela Wittenberg was born in Berlin, Germany. She immigrated to Canada in 1982 and obtained citizenship in 1986. Her hand built clay sculptures are based on observations of nature and the environment. These impressions led to an awareness and a need to express the eternal forces of decay and regeneration within nature. They are symbolically embodied in rounded shapes. Nature works in cycles, the end of one begins another. Clay, a natural substance, is transformed into an art object and if broken down would eventually return to nature. A sense of earth energy is an integral part of the work.
